Resort Tax District Request

The Big Sky Community Organization relies every year on funding through our local Big Sky Resort Area Tax District to help fund the upkeep and maintenance of our parks and trails system in addition to specific project contributions. As a community that is unincorporated we have used this public revenue source to fund the parks and trails, similar to how other communities use a property tax to pay for the upkeep and maintenance of these community assets. If you love our 91 acres of parkland and 19 miles of trails and would like to see the Big Sky Resort Area Tax District continue to use resort tax dollars to pay for the maintenance and upkeep of them, please show your support in one of the following ways:

1.) Send a letter or email to the BSRAD Board via email at
info@resorttax.org or via mail at PO Box 160661, Big Sky, MT 59716

2.) Attend the Q & A session or Allocation Session to stand up and make a public comment supporting BSCO’s application.

Q & A Event – June 4th at 1:00 p.m.
Allocation Event – June 18th at 6:00 p.m.
Both Events will be held at the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center located at Lone Peak High School.

Summary of BSCO’s request:

Maintenance and Operations of Parks & Trails $418,406
This covers 32% of our annual expenses as an organization. The funding directly pays for items like weed spraying, grass cutting, cleaning of trailhead and park restrooms, garbage disposal, utility bills, paved and dirt trail maintenance (i.e. sweeping, sealing, painting parking lots), parking lot plowing, liability insurance for park and trail system along with staffing and operational expenses to support our work. If you like to see clean and well-maintained parks and facilities please support this request.

Beehive Basin & Ousel Falls Trailheads $250,000
We are asking BSRAD to fund $250,000 of the $650,000 that we are investing in critical improvements to the Beehive Basin and Ousel Falls trailheads to ensure that we provide the necessary amenities for the level of use that both of these trailheads see on an annual year-round basis. These improvements include additional parking, trash receptacles, pit-toilets, and trailhead kiosks with directly and safety information. These two locations are important destinations for local residents and tourists to our community. BSCO has committed to funding over 60% of this project through private philanthropy and is asking the BSRAD to fund the remaining $250,000. Please support this request to ensure that these beaufitul gems within our community are well taken care.

Winter Trail Grooming $25,580
Our entire community missed the multi-use groomed trails found throughout the Meadow and Town Center this past winter. Due to changes in routes and accessibility, Lone Mountain Ranch is no longer able to provide the grooming of these trails. BSCO has put together a plan to groom these trails from this point forward that will also further expand the multi-use winter trail network each year. We are asking BSRAD to fund the one-time capital investment of the machinery needed to pack 11km of trails starting next winter. This will ensure that as our community continue to grow we still ensure that multi-use winter trails are available throughout. If you want places to walk your dog, safe routes to walk throughout our community and fat-bike friendly trails during the winter, please speak up and support this request.
